Publikationer

Jonsäll has previously researched the relationship between improvisation and composition in works for electronics and acoustic instruments through his Bachelor thesis Towards the Event Horizon (2021). The eponymous piece for bass clarinet, electric guitar and live electronics was performed at a live streamed concert in Studio Acusticum as part of the festival Nymus Live 2021. Using a minimalist one-page score specifying gestures and textures, the performers improvised based on the structure and sound design of the work.

In his master’s thesis Spectromorphological Reductions (2023) Jonsäll specifically explored spectromorphology and sound-based notation of live electronics. The approach built on existing systems for electroacoustic music analysis, most notably Dennis Smalley’s (1997) theory of spectromorphology and the symbolic language of Lasse Thoresen & Andreas Hedman (2007) based on Pierre Schaeffer’s typo-morphology, as well as Mattias Sköld’s (2023) adaptation of this system for composition and transcription (Sound Notation). The thesis shows how symbolic notation does not need to be dismissed in live electronic performance, but that a sound-based score can complement the compositional and interpretational processes of instrument design and improvisation.

Jonsäll continues to work in the twilight zone of semi-improvised hybrid music, with the ambition to further develop sound-based notation and experimental notation approaches for electronics, aiming to bridge the gap between classical performers and electronic musicians in the world of contemporary music.

CV

Hans Lennart Jonsäll is a composer, producer, sound designer, DJ and electronic music performer currently based in Piteå. Born and raised in the small town of Sundsvall in the mid-north of Sweden, Hans Lennart Jonsäll has emerged as a composer with a particular interest in notation, technology and different ways of transferring the mindset of electronic music to traditional acoustic instruments. Early musical experiments in electronic music from diverse genres (techno/house, trance, ambient, glitch) led him to discover the world of contemporary music. His work is often inspired by science, spirituality and abstract concepts, encompassing both orchestral works, chamber music, electroacoustic compositions and electronic music in various genres. He studied composition at the Piteå School of Music (Luleå University of Technology) and recently finished his master’s degree, working on the notation of live electronics.

Jonsäll has studied for sound artist and electronic composer Björn Eriksson, composers Fredrik Högberg, professor Jan Sandström and Jörgen Häll, sound artist Nyssim Leford, guitarist and interpreter professor Stefan Östersjö and choreographer and researcher professor Åsa Unander-Scharin.
